The Albert and Elaine Borchard Foundation officially announces its intent to launch the Borchard Foundation Center on Literary Arts. The mission of the Center on Literary Arts will be “to create a community of literary artists from across the Americas to foster meaningful connections between people, culture, and the natural world.”

“The Borchard Foundation Center on Literary Arts will support established literary organizations and offer our own programs,” says Michael Spurgeon, the foundation’s executive vice president and the center’s newly appointed director. “The two biggest pieces of our own programming will be a substantial three-year monetary prize to an acclaimed mid-career writer who shows promise for future accomplishment and up to twenty fully-funded fellowships for writers at varying stages of their career to spend two weeks in residence in San Cristόbal de Las Casas, Mexico at what we are calling the ‘Retreat and Encuentro.’”

There will be no application process for either the main award or for fellowships. Names will be selected from the writing public by a nominating committee of literary professionals and be put forward for approval by the foundation’s board. Although there will be rare exceptions, eligibility will be limited to artists with citizenship or residency in Canada, Mexico, or United States.

“We expect to launch in August with the beginning of our next fiscal year,” Mr. Spurgeon explains when asked about the center’s official start date. “Award and fellowship announcements will be made shortly thereafter, with the first ‘Retreat and Encuentro’ to take place in January of 2021.”

Founded in 1978 and located in California, the Albert and Elaine Borchard Foundation’s mission is “to promote research, education, social justice, and the arts, and to improve the human condition.” To carry out this mission, the foundation makes grants to numerous non-profit organizations and operates the Borchard Foundation International Education Center and the Borchard Foundation Center on Law and Aging, two organizations with preeminent reputations in their respective fields.
