Our History

Incorporated in 1978, the Albert and Elaine Borchard Foundation is a private, independent foundation that provides grants for charitable, educational and scientific purposes and its own research and education programs. Albert Borchard was a Los Angeles businessman in trucking, warehousing, and real estate. He and his wife, Elaine, who both died tragically in a 1983 auto accident, were avid supporters of universities in Southern California. The Borchard Foundation has been a faithful and long term contributor to Southern California's university programs.

In addition, the Foundation supports organizations that promote social justice, and the arts and improve the human condition. The Foundation authorized and created its own education and research programs through the creation of the Borchard Foundation International Education Center in 1987, the Borchard Foundation Center on Law and Aging in 1998, and the Borchard Center on Literary Arts in 2020.
